Kl. 13.15 OUTREACH – What is it? Professor Vicky Woollard, City University London
There is a great tradition for outreach in Great Britain. Vicky Woollard will present the field – how did it start and which political initiatives have influenced its development?
How has it developed from the didactic loanboxes to serious dialogue with new audiences?
Vicky Woollard worked for 18 years in the education departments of 3 major London
museums. She ran a number of international conferences on education in museums.
She then moved into University postgraduate teaching on museum education and
museum management.

1. ”Stretch” Carlotta Golden, founder and director of arts charity Stretch, York.
Carlotta Golden has specialized in gallery education with groups of offenders. How can museum collections give these people a quality in life – can it help them get ready for a life after prison? Stretch-projects aim to build bridges between these communities and inspire life-long learning. Stretch facilitates partnerships between marginalized groups and museums and galleries. Stretch works mainly with the offending community but also homeless groups and mental health groups. In the workshop Carlotta Golden will be discussing a few partnerships in detail and carrying out a small practical activity.

2. Deprived areas Päivi Matala, educational assistant, KIASMA, Helsinki
The Museum of Contemporary Art KIASMA in Helsinki is moving the museum out of the white cube into the area of the Kivikko suburb in Eastern Helsinki. How is the project planned – and how do the residents receive it? Päivi Matala works in Museum of Contemporary Art KIASMA. She’s the coordinator of Kiasma’s outreach project with Kivikko suburb in Eastern Helsinki.

3. Working with older audiences Laura Phillips, community programmes manager at British Museum
Over the past two years, The British Museum has explored a number of ways of engaging with older audiences. Laura Phillips will introduce the work of the Community Programmes Team which involves developing programming in collaboration with diverse community partners and encouraging dialogue and debate around the Museum’s collections. Laura Phillips will focus her workshop on explaining the methods used to form relationships with, and deliver activities for, older members of the Museum’s local audience. Laura Phillips is responsible for increasing the engagement of local audiences who are underrepresented in the Museum’s current visitor profile.

4. Bringing the audience and museum collections together Sally Manuireva, director of public programmes at National Museums, Scotland
Talks about recent and current projects in United Kingdoms museums that bring audiences and natural history collections together through outreach work. In particular, Scottish projects that are related to the two hundredth anniversary of Darwin in 2009 and the creation of the new displays for the Royal Museum in Edinburgh, which are scheduled to open in 2011. Sally Manuireva is responsible for learning programmes, community engagement, exhibitions and displays, library and information services and digital media (web) at National Museums, Scotland.

5. ”Elbowroom” Katie Bruce, social inclusion coordinator at Glasgow Museums, based at the Gallery of Modern Art (GoMA)
In 2005, Katie Bruce both coordinated and was one of the artists on an outreach project with women involved in prostitution. This project was part of a wider programme called Rule of Thumb, which explored violence against women issues. This workshop will explore the approach developed by GoMA and the artists to work with the women, the processes involved in the project, the final exhibition, and the impact of outreach work on GoMA’s exhibition and collecting programme.

Museum of London has a very elaborate interpretational practice. The museum has a long tradition for outreach. Over the last few years MoL has through “Renaissance in the regions” received extra finances to develop interpretational practices in collaboration with other London museums. Lucie Amos will introduce the museum and how the museum interpretation and outreach programmes have an impact on the entire organization as well structurally as through practice.
